There is a belief that police officers have been protecting Americans since 1776. According to crime historian Gary Potter of Eastern Kentucky University, policing as a form of law enforcement is a modern concept. Earlier forms of policing during the colonial era had been very informal, consisting primarily of volunteers of night watch groups. However, in the southern parts of the country, law enforcement efforts were not as concerned with larceny and prostitution as it was with preserving the institution of slavery, the driving economic force of the confederacy at the time.

Black enslaved Mothers thought baptizing their children as Christians would make the child free because it was believed “Christians could not be slaves” of course this wasn’t true for blacks. However, it also indicates how many were converted to Christianity, in belief, it would eventually lead to their freedom, in this life or the next. In addition to trusting they’d be viewed as human beings as opposed to property.
